#162: Hill Farmstead » Grassroots Brewing Sankt Hans (Amber Saison)

Denmark / Vermont mild sour lovechild...

The Brewery: Hill Farmstead (Greensboro Bend, VT)
The Brew: Grassroots Brewing Sankt Hans (Amber Saison)
Availability: Bottles (limited)
ABV: 5.4%
Rating: 9.5/10
Location: Home
Found: Hill Farmstead Brewery

The Story? Sankt Hans is a collaboration between former Ølfabrikken brewer, Christian Skovdal Andersen, now of Beer Here and Peter Sonne of Flying Couch Brewing, both from Denmark, and Shaun Hill of Hill Farmstead, for their Grassroots Brewing line in celebration of the summer solstice. I picked this up during the Vermont haul this fall.

The Beer? Sankt Hans pours out a deep, rich amber-caramel color with a fizzy, quickly fading bright white head. The notes quickly presents firm funk and sour aromas and subtle spice notes.

This collaboration has yielded an enjoyable sour. Pleasant earthy and fruit flavors swirl around the palate. Notes of lemon, yeast, slight herbal spice, rose hips, and tea are all apparent and close with a slight funk on the finish. There's a smooth nuttiness in there as well.

Delicate, but not breakable, this saison is well-balanced, going down smooth with only mild astringency.

This Grassroots offering continues to grown in complexity with each sip and each glass, drying out into stronger influence of green apple, champagne, and black cherry flavors. Rich, tart, and funky, this unique saison continues to evolve until the final drop.

Over all, a distinguished brew that only leaves me craving more.

#080: Hill Farmstead » Edward (American Pale Ale)

One more before leaving Hill Farmstead country...

The Brewery: Hill Farmstead (Greensboro Bend, VT)
The Brew: Edward (American Pale Ale)
Availability: Bottles (limited) & draft
ABV: 5.2% | IBUs: 85
Rating: 9.5/10
Location: Farmhouse Tap & Grill

The Story? I knew I had to make our final round at Farmhouse Tap & Grill count, as we'd be heading to The Alchemist in the morning, then back on the road for home. This would likely be my last chance at any beers that don't distribute out of Vermont.

Edward was one of two beers on tap at Hill Farmstead that we didn't get to try. I was tempted to pick up a growler of Edward on good reviews a lone, but Everett stole our hearts too quickly. A porter of that quality is nothing to balk at. That said, Edward was relatively common around Burlington and Waterbury and I figured I should experience what seems to be their flagship brew.

The Brew? My nose is immediately hit with a citrus bomb of auroma with a hint of white pepper and I am instantly happy with my decision. It's hazy, unfiltered, gold body goodness continues the allure.

Down the hatch, Edward has a great mouthfeel and a wonderfully quick, bitter finish. Lots of juicy citrus vying with hop bitterness for attention all over the core flavors. Hints of orange peel evolve into rind, pith, and grapefruit flavors further through my portion as the finish begins to build and lengthen.

Natural carbonation, local water, and dry hopping along with plenty of American hops makes a Pale to remember.

#073: Hill Farmstead » Walden, Life without Principles #3, Susan, Everett

Up and at 'em for some of Vermont's most sought after brews...

The Brewery: Hill Farmstead (Greensboro Bend, VT)

The Story? Hill Farmstead crept up on my radar some time ago, but quickly went into the "yeah, but when I'm I ever going to have access to any" category. It wasn't until I announced my planned tripped to Vermont that I was reminded of their exquisite brews. I checked our very, very loose schedule - nothing planned on Saturday so far... done.

Hill Farmstead offers several series - Ancestral (named in honor of family now past), Philosophical Series (named after favorite Philosophical works), Single Hop, Singular (one-off), Collaborations (Mikkeller, Cigar City, etc), and their Grassroots brand, which recently brewed an Arctic Saison up at Anchorage Brewing.

I wasn't expecting any of Hill Farmstead's more sought after affairs, as the day prior to our trip to VT was their Bottle Release event... the line was down the road by early afternoon and would definitely sell out. Instead, I was looking forward to tastings from their more year-round offerings and snag a bottle of the aforementioned Arctic Saison.

The Beer?

Walden (Hoppy Session Ale) 4% | 9/10
Wonderfully clean, hoppy nose with a clean, tart, hoppy taste to match! Bitingly bitter hop flavor with prominent lemon pith while still being cool, clean, and refreshing. Quite bright, as you might expect. The most impressive note, is how there's no mineral nature to the taste. Clean quality and a great way to start off the day.

Life without Principle #3 (Hibiscus Blonde) 5.4% | 8.5/10
The only Philosophical Series available to taste (one of two on tap), Life w/o Principle, in it's third incarnation, presents itself with plentiful, fluffy head and rich, transparent copper color. First taste, it's dry to the mouth, but with a sweet flavor along with plenty of citrus from the Citra hops and the hibiscus. A very herbal brew with a very slight sweetness to compliment the spice. A pleasant, aromatic brew. Hibiscus + Blonde was a great choice.

Susan (IPA) 6.2%
Lots of fluffy, leggy head on this one atop hazy, gold colored liquid. The taste presents bright citrus and a high IBU with plenty of depth. There's something sweet in the back of this one - clover honey? A dark, sweetness that is fleeting as a dream, but just as satisfying. Fantastic body too.

Various sweet notes rise and slip away throughout this hoppy brew. Hinted whispers of bubblegum peak through along with mild grapefruit notes. A complex and unique offering in a crowded list of American IPAs.

Everett (American Porter) 7.6% | 9.5/10
On first sip, this one already takes the cake. BIG, roasted coffee nose emits from this batch of headless, unfiltered black gold. Sweet to the taste with a fantastic mouthfeel of silky, low, natural carbonation. There's a strong, rooty aspect to this concoction, supporting lovely notes of maple and coffee.

This is dark beer bliss with that strong, long finish we dream of. We brought a batch of this back home to share with our Vermont loving friends at The Enchanted Badger here in town and even four days later it was just as wonderful.

In the end, four of the highest quality brews I tasted on the trip and apart from a mild cash-only scare, we left with smiles on our faces, a big brown jug of Everett, along with bottles of Arctic Saison and Sankt Hans. Look for posts on the two latter to come as well as on their Edward pale ale...

The Vermont Haul...

My partner and I spent the weekend up in Vermont visiting The Alchemist, Hill Farmstead, Zero Gravity, Fiddlehead, and Rock Art breweries amongst a slew of pubs and tastings. Lots of posts from the trip coming soon.

In this picture:

- Rock Art's Imperial Pumpkin Stout (aged, brewed with spruce)
- Harpoon's Imperial Pumpkin Stout
- Deschutes Brewery's Class of '88 Barleywine
- Anchorage Brewing Darkest Hour (Belgian-style stout in white oak, whiskey, and pinor noir barrels), Anadromous (Black Sour), and Bitter Monk (Belgian-style Double IPA in Chardonnay oak)
- Hill Farmstead Grassroots' Arctic Saison (collab with Anchorage) and Sankt Hans
- plus growlers of Fiddlehead IPA, Rock Art Saison, and Hill Farmstead's Everett Porter

Whew!
