The Story? After jumping the gun on the release announcement (though the info was on good authority), Hopslam finally made it's way to Ithaca, NY for the first time. The lauded hop-forward, winter seasonal from Bell's is highly sought after, typically selling out in the week or two following release in most areas, occasionally tempting some to spark some controversy, attempting to by, say 400 bottles worth. Expedition Stout defied all expectations, would Bell's hoppy heavy-hitter do the same?

The Beer? Bubbly, transparent amber liquid pours out, forming a fizzy head with mild lacing. Strong tangerine and grapefruit aromas burst from the glass backed by bright, almost gin-like herbal notes, further complimented by soft wafts of vanilla and honey.

On first sip, it's immediately apparent this is an easy-down IPA, surprising, especially for what a big beer this is.

Bitter and biting flavors kick things off with a dry finish packed with potent grapefruit flavors and a mild hop heat. As with any big-hop Bell's, they haven't forgotten the malts. A sweet backbone, expertly balances the west-coast madness, while the whole package keeps the mouthfeel clean and delicious.

The flavor is quite pithy against the most juicy nose. Honey and biscuit appear on the front of each sip and then quickly vanish. It's a nice touch amidst the floral and beastly citrus flavors. There's even mild hibiscus & elderberry notes far in. The body get's a little chewy towards the end, reveling some of it's 10% girth, but never ceases to be bring and highly drinkable.

Overall, a recommended, well-balanced hop-head's dream that lives up to the hype, with some elegant flourishes, without getting uppity.

The Story? My pals in Syracuse's Lucid Pyramids picked me up a 4-pack of these, as a thank-you for using my basement as their pre-tour rehearsal space, which led to a highly enjoyable night in of writing and dynamic, computational noise music coming from below.

The Beer? Into the glass, Righteous bubbles up to a fluffy ivory head atop a translucent body of hazy copper beer. A bold, rye-hop nose with just a pinch of spice reels me in.

It's smooth and light bodied, finishing with an unabashed bite of dry, bitterness. Righteous is full of piney, herbal & citrus hop goodness with some faint mineral notes, and touches of caramel and roasted malts. Overall, a solid go-to full of mild rye heat and full, hop pine flavors,

The Story?  Continuing, with Friday's Lager theme, it's onto Uinta's winter offering, Yard Sale. First time around with this seasonal from one of my favorite breweries from 2013.

The Beer? Yard Sale starts with a dark, transparent ruby-brown body and fluffy white head. The nose is transparent and doesn't allude much to what may be in store.

An amber at it's core, this lager is mild and clean, with just a touch of spice. Smooth malts allude to honey, caramel and the faintest thought of vanilla.

Overall, very sesh for a winter. Solid, as anything from Uinta is, but more of a beer-and-do-stuff that what I was in the mood for at the moment.

The Story? Jeremy from Remarkable Liquids and Sam from Jack's Abby were in town doing tastings at Fingerlakes Beverage and The Westy on Friday, serving up their lauded Hoponious Union and the freshly released, 2014 edition of Mass Rising.

The 2013 Great American Beer Festival Gold Medal winner is packed with 7 varieties of American hops. Where Hoponious solely rests on Citra & Centennial, Mass Rising packs in Amarillo, Calypso, Mosaic, and others for it's core, then touched with those two former. This batch is incredibly fresh, having come off the line earlier this week. Damn guys...

The Beer? Our star DIPL serves up with a pale, hazy yellow body topped with a thin white head - retaining it's lager looks, while packing a considerable punch. The nose is bright, but not as urgent as their IPL. Strong notes of grapefruit, grass, and even a touch of lime - all incredibly inviting.

Down the hatch, the flavors swirling around are incredible. It's a beautiful bouquet of American hop goodness. It kicks off bright (though a touch darker than Hoponious) and bitter, smoothing out just a touch early in, packed with fruit notes like tangerine, grapefruit, pear and apple. It's strong, but well balanced that's a touch on the acidic end with just a touch of earthiness, all backed by Jack's malt mastery.

It's crisp with a good amount of carbonation and a mild chewiness in the mouthfeel for a robust beer experience. Tons of pine, pith, and rind flavors are present throughout.

Overall, a recommended, hop-forward brew that's refreshing, but still a bit of a sipper. Jack's does it again, crossing styles and knocking it out of the park. Trade in your old DIPA for slammin' DIPL.

The Story? It's a Monday night, I've just gotten off work and I am determined to have a productive evening. I figure I'll throw up a batch of flyers around town, stop by The Enchanted Badger, and land at Ithaca Beer Co. for one of their 5-Barrel series I haven't had yet while dropping off a bit of paperwork. Nope. It's 5° F, snowing, and everything is closed. Well fine. I'll grab a bottle of Lagunita's perihelial release, The Hairy Eyeball Ale and make myself a big winter dinner.

I was a bit bummed to see this one only transition to bombers-only, having grown partial to the 6-Packs of yore, but 22 oz. is going to be PLENTY.

The Beer? Burly, malt aromas fume up from the glass with plentiful notes of raisin and red fruit, backed by a strong, roasted bouquet. To the eye, it's a dark, almost cola brown and transparent, crowned with a fluffy ivory head that sticks around.

Onto the palate, it wields a meaty, chewy mouthfeel. Red & tropical fruit notes are the first flavors to arrive making for a lovely, sweet and toasty first few sips. As remembered, this is godddamn good.

Strong and sweet, Eyeball grows with notes of grain and herbs emerging while revealing it's 9.4% gravity. Deftly complex, this is one hell of a tasty, drinkable, big meal beer.
